Around and About the Courses – Altea (Don Cayo)

Altea Club de Golf is located on the lower slopes of the Sierra Bernia mountain close to junction 64 off the A7 motorway and only 15 minutes from Benidorm and is the oldest course on the Costa Blanca being first opened to the public in 1974.

The course is generally know as Don Cayo and is a 9 hole course with a par of 72 playing from 18 different tees with the course measuring 6,044 metres (6,648 yards) from the yellow tees with wonderful mountain and sea views and is characterised by Palm and Jacaranda trees and has a number of well positioned bunkers and water hazards.

The club has a superb clubhouse with views over the course and the small practise area and putting green.

Although only a 9 hole layout golfers of all standards will find the course challenging in particular the 3rd/12th hole which plays as a very long par 4 and a par 5 on the back nine which is an extremely tight dog-leg hole with no bail out area either right or left.

The 8th/17th hole is a low stroke index uphill par 4 which plays significantly longer than the yardage and only the longest of hitters can reach the green in two shots.

The practice putting green is quite small and generally flat and the driving range/practice area is very small and limited to iron play only.

The course itself has been squeezed into the foothills of exclusive Altea Hills and they have made the most of the limited space that they have and the course is well worth a game especially at the competitively priced green fees they offer.
