Alicante Golf – Update

Alicante Golf is a Seve Ballesteros designed course based in the heart of the city close to the San Juan beaches and is a superb 18 hole course consisting of 6 par 3’s,6 par 4’s and 6 par 5 holes.

They have struggled for many years with problems with the greens caused initially when golfers from overseas brought a disease on the bottom of their shoes which badly affected the greens.

Earlier this year they had considered totally re-seeding every green but following some hard work the greens were in excellent condition and such dramatic action was not needed.

Unfortunately the golfing gods decided to twist the knife just a little and they received a water delivery which was contaminated with too high a salt level and this again has badly damaged the greens.

Local golf courses spend circa €500k per year to water the courses and keep them in the condition we all expect given the extremely high temperatures and lack of rain for most of the year.

They hope to recover the situation in a few weeks but at least three of the greens will need total re-seeding or re-turfing,namely greens on holes 2,9 and 10 and until then they will have temporary greens on those holes.

They will offer a significant discount on green fees until then and while not ideal the course is still worth a game but don’t expect it to be in the usual excellent condition
